Booking choice: The paddleboard tour to En-Vau, from $67 per person. Check dates Tour details
The famous calanques were made for walkers: white limestone paths over the ridges, then a scramble down to a pebble beach. They are also hard, hot and sometimes closed. A boat sees more in less time, but it never lands you on En-Vau.
Here are the real walking times, how hard each route is, when the land shuts, and how to choose.
The quick answer
The easy walks are Cassis to Port-Miou (30 min) and on to Port-Pin. En-Vau is about an hour from Port-Miou with a steep, slippery last stretch, and Sugiton is 45 minutes down from the Luminy bus with an hour's climb back. From 1 June to 30 September the massif can close for fire risk the next day; boats still run then. Hike in spring and autumn, take the boat in high summer, or paddle to En-Vau and get a bit of both.

Is the Calanques hike hard?
The short walks to Port-Miou and Port-Pin are easy. En-Vau, Sugiton and Morgiou mean steep, rocky descents and a hot climb back.
Marseille Tourisme rates the paths to En-Vau as intermediate, with slippery rocks. The park warns that the Sugiton climb back takes at least an hour. Along the Devenson cliffs it warns that sudden gusts can cause a fatal fall, and in November 2025 the forestry office closed two trails, the Pas Supérieur de la Melette and the sentier vert de l'Escu, signed "risk of fatal fall".
Wear shoes with grip, not flip-flops. Carry more water than you think: there is none at the calanques, and little shade on the ridges. In July and August, start before 9.
How long does it take to hike the Calanques?
From 30 minutes (Cassis to Port-Miou) to about 3 hours one way (Luminy to En-Vau). Most classic walks take 45 minutes to an hour each way.
One-way times from the park and Marseille Tourisme. Add the way back, which is usually uphill.
| Walk | Start | One way | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Port-Miou | Cassis centre | About 30 min | Easy |
| Port-Pin | Port-Miou | 15 to 25 min (2 km) | Easy, good with kids |
| En-Vau | Port-Miou | About 1h (3.6 km) | Steep, slippery descent |
| Sugiton | Luminy bus stop | About 45 min | 1h+ to climb back; booking on busy summer days |
| Devenson cliffs | Luminy bus stop | About 1h30 | Exposed; stay on the path |
| En-Vau | Luminy bus stop | About 3h | 2h to the lookout |
| Sormiou | La Cayolle or Les Baumettes | 45 min to 1h | Moderate |
| Morgiou | Les Baumettes | About 1h | Moderate |
Can you walk to Calanques from Cassis?
Yes. Port-Miou is about 30 minutes from the harbour, Port-Pin 15 to 25 minutes further and En-Vau about an hour from Port-Miou.
The path leaves the edge of town for Port-Miou, follows the inlet and climbs over to Port-Pin, a beach of sand and pebbles under pines. From there to En-Vau is the hard part. The park's blue-marked "Sentier bleu" runs about 100 m above the shore between En-Vau and Port-Pin. En-Vau falls into shade in the afternoon and has no bins.
Drivers can leave the car at the free Les Gorguettes park-and-ride, with a shuttle to Port-Miou. Getting to Cassis is in boats from Cassis.

Can I go hiking in the Calanques near Marseille?
Yes, straight from city buses. Take the B1 to Luminy for Sugiton, buses 22 or 23 for Sormiou and Morgiou, or 19 and 20 to Callelongue for the coast path.
Sugiton is the classic: about 30 minutes from the Luminy stop to the lookout and 45 to the water. In summer 2026 it needed a free reservation on busy days, capped at 400 a day: 20 and 21 June, daily from 27 June to 30 August, and 5, 6, 12 and 13 September. Booking opened three days ahead at 09:00 and closed the day before at 18:00. The Sugiton reservation post has the details.
Sugiton and the Pierres Tombées closed after a rockfall on 1 October 2025 and reopened on 31 October once the unstable rock was cleared. Check the park site before any walk there.

When are the Calanques closed to hikers?
On red fire-risk days between 1 June and 30 September, when all land access is banned. The map for the next day comes out each evening.
The fire-risk map is published between 17:00 and 18:00 for the next day, on the park site and in the Mes Calanques app. On a red day you may not enter the massif at all, and the Route des Crêtes above Cassis closes too. Boat trips still run, landing is banned, and the Frioul islands stay open.
That makes a boat the safe booking in July and August: a closure that wrecks a hike leaves most boat trips untouched. A red day also stops paddlers landing at En-Vau, so ask the paddle operator what happens to your booking. More in the fire-risk post.
The boats run on red days. A small group from Marseille along the cliffs, with a swim from the boat.

Is the paddleboard tour a good middle way?
Yes, if you can swim and are reasonably fit. You paddle from Port-Miou to En-Vau with a guide, swim from the beach and paddle back, in about 3.5 hours.
The paddleboard tour is run by Marseille Calanques Passion from a meeting point by the Tennis Club Presqu'île at Port-Miou. The listing gives an hour of paddling each way and an hour of free time at En-Vau. Beginners are fine, but wind makes it harder, and the listing rules out non-swimmers and people over 100 kg. Parking at Port-Miou is hard in the afternoon, so come by the shuttle or on foot.
Amber, in August 2026: "As a novice it brought us so much confidence on the open sea with busy boats around."

If you have two days, yes: a boat to see the coast, then one walk to the calanque you liked best.
One plan that works: a morning boat from Marseille or Cassis to see En-Vau, Devenson and Sugiton from the water. The next day, walk to whichever one stayed with you, early, before the heat. On a red day, swap them. If you only have one day in July or August, take the boat.

Do you need hiking boots for the Calanques?
Boots aren't required, but shoes with a good grip are. The limestone is polished and slippery on the descents to En-Vau and Sugiton.
Is there drinking water on the Calanques trails?
Not at the calanques. Callelongue has a drinking fountain; elsewhere, carry at least a litre or two per person in summer.
Can children hike to the Calanques?
Port-Pin, about 45 minutes from Cassis, suits young children. The climbs back from En-Vau and Sugiton are hard for small legs.
Can you hike the Calanques in winter?
Yes, and it is a good time: cool, quiet and outside the fire-risk season. Watch for mistral days on the cliff paths.
