The Calanques do not close in winter. The fire map stops on 30 September, Sugiton needs no booking, and the roads to Sormiou and Morgiou reopen to cars. What shrinks is the boat timetable, and what grows is the chance of mistral.
This post covers November 2026 to March 2027: which boats run, how cold the water gets, and what to do when the sea says no.
The quick answer
The Cassis port boats run all year, weather permitting, with reduced winter hours and tickets bought at the harbour. Online trips from Marseille vary by operator, so check the dates on each listing. The sea drops from about 17 °C in November to 13 °C in February and March. The mistral is most common in winter and spring, and on a blown-out day Cosquer Méditerranée in Marseille is the best indoor plan.
Do Calanques boat trips run from November to March?
Some do. The Cassis port boats sail every day of the year when the weather allows, on a shorter winter timetable.
The Cassis tourist office says the boatmen of the GIE des bateliers cassidains run all year, weather permitting, with reduced hours in winter. Out of season you buy the ticket from the captains at the quay. The 2026 circuits run from 3 calanques in 1 hour for EUR 19 to 9 calanques and Sormiou in 2 h 20 for EUR 33.
This is the cheapest boat into the Calanques and it is not sold online, so we earn nothing on it. In winter it is also the most reliable option, since you decide on the morning, look at the sea, and buy. Our Cassis boat guide covers the circuits.
| Cassis circuit (2026) | Time | Adult price |
|---|---|---|
| 3 calanques (to En-Vau) | 1 h | EUR 19 |
| 5 calanques | 1 h 20 | EUR 25 |
| 8 calanques | 1 h 50 | EUR 29 |
| 9 calanques, to Sormiou | 2 h 20 | EUR 33 |

Which online Calanques trips run in winter?
It depends on the listing. The Marseille tourist office shows Goélette Alliance and Bleu Evasion as open all year in 2026, but departures thin out. Check dates on each tour before you plan around it.
The tourist office lists Goélette Alliance, which runs the schooner day and the sunset sail, and Bleu Evasion, which runs the picnic catamaran, as open all year in 2026. Open all year is not the same as sailing every day. Swim trips need warm-ish water and calm seas, and operators run fewer of them when both are missing. The calendar on each listing is the real answer.
Public transport by sea changes too. The RTM shuttle from the Vieux-Port to Pointe Rouge ran from 25 April to 27 September 2026 and does not run in winter. The Frioul-If Express to the Frioul islands sails all year (park access page).

Check dates for the iconic calanques boat tourHow cold is the sea in the Calanques in winter?
About 17 °C in November, 15 °C in December, 14 °C in January and 13 °C in February and March. Swimming is for the brave or the wetsuited.
Those are average monthly sea temperatures for Marseille from the climate site cestee.fr. October still sits around 19 °C, which is why late-season swim trips work. By December most people stay on deck.
If you want to get in, pick a trip that brings the suit. The snorkeling trip from Pointe Rouge makes a wetsuit mandatory on the boat and ends with hot showers. The catamaran listings mention wetsuits when the water is cold. The Cassis boatmen themselves say the swim season starts in May.
| Month | Sea (°C, average) | Our take |
|---|---|---|
| October | 19 | Last easy swims |
| November | 17 | Wetsuit or a quick dip |
| December | 15 | Sightseeing only for most |
| January | 14 | Cold; calm days are clear |
| February | 13 | Coldest, with March |
| March | 13 | Wind season, longer days |
| April | 14 | Boats ramp up again |

Snorkel with instructors, wetsuit, fins and mask included, then a hot shower back at Pointe Rouge.
Explore the snorkeling trip Tour detailsHow does the mistral affect winter boat trips?
It is the main reason boats stay in port. The mistral is most frequent in winter and spring, often blows around 50 km/h, and episodes last one to three days or longer.
The mistral is a cold, dry northwest wind that funnels down the Rhône valley. It brings clear skies and short, steep seas off the coast. Météo-France counts about 81 mistral days a year at Toulon, and Marseille once had 23 in a row (Wikipedia FR). The Cassis boats sail weather permitting and publish no cancellation figures, so the call is made on the day.
Plan a winter boat day with slack. Put it early in the trip, check the forecast the evening before, and keep a second day free. Online bookings cancel free up to 24 hours before, and an operator that cancels for weather refunds or rebooks. The Route des Crêtes above Cassis also closes in strong wind.

What can you do in Marseille when the boats are not running?
Visit Cosquer Méditerranée, the replica of the painted cave under the Calanques. Adults pay EUR 18 in 2026 and you must book.
The Cosquer cave sits under Cap Morgiou with its entrance about 37 m below the sea, and it holds more than 480 painted or engraved works, made between 33,000 and 19,000 years ago. The replica at the Villa Méditerranée, next to the Mucem, takes you through it in small carts of up to six people with an audio guide in six languages. The tourist office listing gives 2026 prices of EUR 18 for adults, EUR 11 for ages 10 to 17 and EUR 6 for ages 6 to 9, with opening from 09:30 to 18:00 on weekdays and to 19:30 on weekends and school holidays.
It pairs well with the boats. The Bandol cruise passes the cave's location at La Triperie, and the schooner meets at the Mucem, a short walk away.
Which calanques are quieter in autumn and winter?
All of them, compared with summer. Sugiton needs no booking, Sormiou and Morgiou are reachable by car again, and En-Vau goes from packed to peaceful.
The park's busiest times are spring weekends, July and August, and fine weekends. From November the summer road closures to Sormiou, Morgiou and Callelongue are over; Marseille Tourisme gives the restricted season as early April to Toussaint. The fire map and the Sugiton reservation do not apply.
One change on the Cassis side: works on a new water reservoir disrupt the Port-Miou sector until June 2027. Hikers from the Col de la Gardiole are sent on a detour via Port-Pin, adding about an hour, and the track between the Auberge de la Fontasse and Port-Miou is closed to bikes (park notice). The boats are unaffected. Short days count too: En-Vau falls into shade in the afternoon, so go in the morning. More in our swimming guide.

Can you take a boat to the Calanques in winter?
Yes. The Cassis port boats run all year when the weather allows, with fewer departures. Online trips from Marseille vary, so check the dates on each listing.
Is it worth visiting the Calanques in November?
Yes, if you are flexible. The sea is still about 17 °C, crowds are gone and no summer access rules apply. Keep a spare day for mistral.
Can you swim in the Calanques in winter?
Some people do, but the sea averages 13 to 15 °C from December to March. A wetsuit makes it pleasant; the snorkeling trip includes one.
Do I need to book the Cassis boats in winter?
No, and you cannot book them online. Buy at the quay on the day; out of season the captains sell tickets directly.
