Booking choice: The picnic catamaran, from $89 per person. Check dates Tour details
Since 2022 the national park has capped summer visits to Sugiton and the neighbouring Pierres Tombées with a free online reservation. In 2026 it ran for the fifth year, from late June to mid September.
Here is how it worked, why the park keeps it, what happened after the October 2025 rockfall, and how to see Sugiton without a reservation.
The quick answer
In 2026 Sugiton and Pierres Tombées required a free reservation on 20-21 June, every day from 27 June to 30 August, and on 5-6 and 12-13 September. The cap was 400 people a day. Booking opened at 09:00 three days before and closed at 18:00 the day before; you showed a QR code on arrival. The park has extended the scheme through 2027. Boats need no reservation.
How did the Sugiton reservation work in 2026?
Free, online, capped at 400 people a day, with booking open from 09:00 three days ahead until 18:00 the day before. One booking covered up to five people.
The park listed the regulated dates on its 2026 announcement. Booking was on the park website under Réservation Sugiton. The reservation page sets the rules: one booking for up to five people, children under 3 free, and a maximum of eight bookings per person over the season. You got an email with a QR code to show the agents on arrival (Marseille Tourisme).
The first slots opened on 17 June at 09:00 for 20 June. The 400 daily places are confirmed by Made in Marseille. The booking covers the shore only. The Col de Sugiton lookout above stays open without one.

Why does Sugiton need a reservation?
Erosion. On peak summer days close to 2,000 people a day walked down, and the slopes were sliding into the sea.
The park's overcrowding page puts Sugiton at close to 2,000 visitors a day at its peaks, and the reservation page cites around 2,500 in summer. Every pair of feet off the path loosens soil that slides downhill, which strips the pines' roots and stops anything regrowing.
The cap is the park's answer. The park describes the erosion there as "très marquée" (very marked). Fire closures come first: on a red day the park cancels every booking, and you have to book a new date yourself.

Why was Sugiton closed in October 2025?
A rockfall on 1 October 2025 hit the foot of a cliff beside the access path. The City of Marseille closed Sugiton and Pierres Tombées, then reopened both on 31 October.
The closure was announced on 9 October 2025, "until further notice", as Fréquence Sud reported. Crews removed the unstable rock and the two calanques reopened on 31 October 2025 (Fréquence Sud).
The limestone keeps moving. In November 2025 the forestry office closed two other trails, the Pas Supérieur de la Melette and the sentier vert de l'Escu, with barriers and "risk of fatal fall" signs (FFRandonnée). Stick to signed paths and check the park's news page before a walk.
Can you see Sugiton by boat without a reservation?
Yes. The reservation is for the walk-in shore. Boats pass Sugiton, and one catamaran trip stops off it for a swim.
The picnic catamaran from Pointe Rouge lists Sugiton as a 75-minute swim and snorkel stop, along with the Riou islands. You swim from the boat and do not walk up the beach. The listing calls the stops a reference, since the skipper picks them by weather. One guest wrote of "lots of information and 3 swimming stops".
For a look without a swim, the 13 calanques cruise from Bandol runs past Sugiton on its way to Sormiou, and the longest Cassis port circuit, 9 calanques to Sormiou in 2 h 20 for EUR 33 in 2026, passes it too. That harbour ticket is sold only at the kiosk, and we earn nothing on it. More in our guide to the best calanques.

Explore the picnic catamaran Tour detailsHow do you walk to Sugiton from Luminy?
Take bus B1 to the Luminy park stop, then walk about 30 minutes to the lookout and 45 to the shore. Allow at least an hour to climb back.
The park's Sugiton page gives those times. The bus is RTM line B1 to Luminy PN des Calanques, with the 521 in the evening (park access page). Take water, shoes with grip and nothing you mind carrying uphill in heat.
Outside the regulated dates no booking is needed. Late September and October are the sweet spot: warm water, no QR code, far fewer people. Our hike or boat guide compares the effort.
Will Sugiton need a reservation in 2027?
Yes. The park says the scheme, running since 2022, has been extended through 2027. The 2027 dates are not out yet.
The reservation page states the measure started in 2022 and has been extended to 2027. In 2026 the park published its dates in early May, and the pattern has been the same each year: weekends in late June and September, every day in July and August. Plan on that, and confirm on the park site in spring.
